- Create an Orb. An Orb is one complete, self-contained profile — its own name, its own categories, and its own items. When you create one, pick a starting template — Personal, Organization / Site, or Freeform — to get an initial set of categories. You can rename, reorder, add, or delete them at any time afterwards.
- Craft an item. Choose an icon from the built-in library — browse by genre or search by keyword — then pick a color, give it a title, and write what it does for you in the details. There are no numeric stats; the "effect" is whatever you write.
- Equip it. Equipped items are packed into your Cosmos Orb. The more you equip, the more the icons pack together and the cosmic base color shifts. Equip and unequip right from the home screen.
- Arrange your items. Long-press and drag to reorder — dropping an item into another category moves it there. To move an item to a distant category, or to one that is empty and has no heading showing yet, open the ⋮ menu on the row and choose Move to Category.
- Share it. Export a snapshot image in one of three layouts: Orb Only, Title, or Detail. Then post it wherever you like.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is my data stored? Do I need an account?
No account and no sign-up. Everything you write is stored locally on your device only — there is no server and no cloud sync. That also means data is not shared between the App Store version and the Web version, and clearing your browser's site data will remove what you made in the Web version.
How do I back up or move my data?
Export a JSON file from the app — either a single Orb or a full backup of every Orb. To restore, import that file. Importing adds to your data rather than overwriting it, so restoring a backup never destroys what you already have (you may end up with duplicates, which you can delete). Invalid files are rejected rather than partially loaded.
Can I move data between the App Store version and the Web version?
Yes. Both versions read and write the same JSON format, so a file exported from one can be imported into the other in either direction. Export from the first, get the file across to the other device however you like (AirDrop, iCloud Drive, email, a cloud folder), then import it. What does not happen is automatic syncing — nothing travels between the two on its own, and changes you make afterwards in one will not appear in the other. Treat it as moving a file, not as connecting two accounts. One caveat: if one side is running a much older build, it may refuse a file written by a newer one; updating that side fixes it.
Can I rename the exported file?
Yes. Importing never looks at the file name — only at the contents of the JSON — so
you can rename it freely, including with spaces, emoji, or non-Latin characters.
The one thing to avoid is removing the .json extension: the file picker
filters by extension, so the file simply will not appear in the list.
Why can't I delete this category?
A category can only be deleted when it is empty, and an Orb must always keep at least one category. Move or delete the items inside it first. Deleting an Orb, on the other hand, deletes the items inside it as well — the confirmation dialog tells you how many items will be removed.
Can I add my own icons?
Not at the moment. SelfStatus ships with 336 built-in icons across 32 genres, and only those can be used. This is deliberate: keeping every icon inside the app means nothing is loaded from an external source. The icons are Material Icons, used under the Apache License 2.0 (see Licenses).
Is there a limit on how much I can write?
Yes — item title 40 characters, item details 300, Orb name 30, and category name 20. A counter appears as you approach the limit. These limits apply only while typing: data restored from a backup is never truncated, even if it was written before the limits existed.
Does the shared image include what I wrote?
Only short labels. The Title layout adds your Orb name and equipment count, and Detail adds category and item names. Your longer description text is never drawn into a shared image in any layout. Choose Orb Only if you want to share the picture without any of your words on it.
How many Orbs can I have?
In the Web version, as many as you like. In the App Store version the first three are free, and creating each one after that is unlocked by watching a reward ad — the menu item changes to Watch Ad to Create Orb so you know before you tap. Orbs are fully independent of each other: separate categories, items, and equipped state. If you want to reuse something you already wrote, use Copy from Another Orb rather than typing it again.
Is there a difference between the App Store version and the Web version?
The core experience is the same. The differences come from the platform: the Web version has no reward-ad features (see below), and your data lives in the browser rather than in an app, so it is separate from the iOS version and is cleared if you clear site data. The App Store version is optimized for iPhone and iPad.
How do ads work in this app?
In the App Store version, a banner is shown at the bottom of the screen. There are also three optional reward ads: one hides banners for two hours (handy when you want to show your Orb on a screen at a meetup), one removes the app-name footer from a single shared image, and one creates an Orb beyond the first three. Nothing here can be bought with money — there are no in-app purchases and no subscription — and skipping every reward ad still leaves you the whole app with three Orbs. In the Web version, ads are handled by the surrounding zikimit page instead, so these reward entry points are not shown and there is no limit on Orbs.
Is SelfStatus a personality test?
No. It does not analyze, score, diagnose, or evaluate you in any way, and it does not provide psychological, medical, or career advice. Every item, category, and word on your status screen was written by you. Think of it as a place to lay out how you see yourself, not a place that tells you.
The app says a file could not be loaded. What now?
The message includes the specific reason — for example, the file is not valid JSON,
it was not exported by SelfStatus, or it contains no Orb data. Check that you picked
the right .json file and that it has not been edited by hand. Your
existing data is left untouched when an import fails.
